Overview

This 30-credit Level-7 module has been designed to support registered midwives to develop their knowledge and clinical skills in the systematic assessment of the healthy neonate.

Learning content will include identification of relevant risk factors, how to recognise deviation from normal and escalation to the multi-professional team for further investigation and diagnoses where indicated.

You will develop skills to undertake the systematic examination of the newborn, considering:

  • legal and ethical principles
  • clinical decision-making skills
  • communication
  • embryology and fetal development
  • impact of antenatal events on the newborn
  • cardiovascular physiology
  • respiratory physiology
  • examination of the eyes
  • examination of the hips
  • birth injuries
  • impact of birthweight
  • deviations from normal
  • record-keeping
  • critical analysis and synthesis of the evidence

The course will be facilitated by professionals with a broad range of experiences, including staff, specialist clinical practitioners and neonatologists.

You will have access to the wider suite of support services available at the University to support your Level-7 writing and study skills.

Entry requirements

To successfully apply, you must:

  • be an NMC-registered midwife
  • have achieved a minimum 2:2 in your previous degree
  • have a statement of support from your line manager

Postgraduate Master's Loan

If you live in England you may be able to apply for a special Government-funded Master's Loan to help pay your tuition fees and living costs.

Learning and assessment

You will study via a blended learning approach. This includes learning through a variety of simulation environments, lectures, seminars, guided study and practice-based learning. Simulation and clinical skills sessions will be held to enable you to experience clinical environments in a controlled, educational setting.

Assessment will include a written assignment and submission of a clinical logbook with 30 completed systematic and physical examinations of the newborn.
