Overview

Want to be a commercially savvy legal professional? How about a business leader with a keen eye for the law? This joint honours course in business studies and law will help you achieve those goals.

Our three-year BSc (Hons) in Business Studies and Law gives you a clear understanding of the interface between business activity and the legal framework within which it operates. Law has an increasing influence on many aspects of business.

For example, it governs:

contractual arrangements
employment protection
consumer protection
many aspects of accounting and finance

Our programme prepares you for business careers with a legal dimension, developing insight and transferable skills that set you apart in a competitive job marketplace. You will also be able to pursue a legal career through further study after graduation, with the advantage of additional commercial knowledge.

You will learn from sector leading academics and seasoned business experts, and qualified solicitors and barristers with a wealth of real-world experience.

Entry requirements

Typical offer - 112 UCAS tariff points.

A levels: BBC - there are no subject specific requirements.
T levels: Merit - there are no specific subject requirements.
BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM - there are no specific subject requirements.
Applicants on Access Programmes: Meet UCAS tariff of 112 points. There are no specific subject requirements.
International Baccalaureate Requirements: 112 points to include at least 2 HL subjects.
Plus minimum of: GCSE English at grade C or 4 (equivalents accepted).
English language requirements: Minimum IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.

Foundation Year entry

If you are a UK student and do not meet the entry requirements for this course, you may be nominated on our Foundation Year in Clinical Sciences and Medicine programme.

Pass each module and achieve a programme average of at least 40%.

You will study the relevant core modules plus five optional modules.

If you are an international student and do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry onto this course, you may be interested in our International College.

Transferring from another university

If you are currently studying at another university and would like to transfer to the University of Bradford, this course accepts students into the second or third year. This is called advanced entry.

Applications for advanced entry will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must include an official transcript (not a screenshot of a portal), all module descriptors, and relevant qualifications. Module descriptors must include learning outcomes.

Applications must be submitted through UCAS and the required documents emailed along with your UCAS Personal ID no later than 31 August prior to the course starting in September. Relevant documents should be emailed to [email protected]

Placement Year

This 4-year programme offers you the opportunity to take up a placement year working in business in your third year.

Placements are real, paid jobs in a wide variety of organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and offer you a valuable opportunity to experience first-hand how business, management and legal concepts are applied in practice, and to give you direct exposure to real issues in the workplace. It can also be done abroad.

The placement year is a vital part of your learning and will add significantly to your personal development, self-confidence, planning, communication and business acumen skills. Statistics show that students who have undertaken a placement year benefit from a better graduate job, higher graduate starting salary and a better degree outcome.

In a competitive graduate market, valuable experience and employability skills gained from a year’s work placement will differentiate you from the thousands of other graduates seeking work.

We find that students return from their placement year with their confidence and personal skills enhanced and ready to implement their focused plan for the future.

The School of Law has links with a range of top law organisations in Bradford and the surrounding area, and has developed a range of placement opportunities open exclusively to students of the University through collaboration with the School’s partners.

Additionally, the School of Management has an excellent network of organisations that offer placements.

Together we ensure your placement is appropriately challenging and that you can make a real and positive impact on the business.

Placements are not guaranteed, and students will have to invest considerable time and effort in their 2nd year in securing one, with the support of the dedicated Careers team.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Methods of assessment vary according to the learning outcomes of particular modules and the stage of study. Accordingly, a mixture of examinations, essays, group work and presentations will be used in assessment of your work.

For all taught modules your learning will be directed, supported and reinforced through a combination of lectures, tutorials, small group seminars, virtual learning environment activities and guided private studies. Generally, for each module, you will attend one lecture and one tutorial each week during which you will be in direct contact with teaching staff.

Career prospects

The growing importance of law has created new job opportunities in careers that link business and law.

Career opportunities exist in general management, banking and finance, journalism, teaching, legal executive and paralegal professions.

Among the organisations recently to have employed our graduates are Bradford Council and Halifax Magistrates’ Court.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

The School of Management has joined the prestigious worldwide AWS Academy program from Amazon Web Services (AWS). All students will be given an opportunity to enhance their employability skills, helping to make them ready for the world of work.

AWS Academy is a global program that provides educational institutions with access to cloud computing content to support student learning in a competitive digital workplace. As a member of the AWS Academy, the University of Bradford will help students become proficient and certified in the use of AWS technologies and ready to join the dynamic cloud IT workforce.

All learners will have the opportunity to seek professional certification with the skills gained through AWS Academy content, delivered by University staff that are AWS Academy accredited.
